With over 100 clubs available across the Junior School, variety is a defining feature of the programme. Children can choose from activities as different as Origami, Chess, Lego animation, Baking, Minecraft and Street dance. There are opportunities to have a go at new games like Dragonwood, develop creativity through art, dance and performance, or enjoy the outdoors through activities such as Trail Trekkers. Lots of clubs are open to children from Primary 3 to Primary 7 while Dance is available from Nursery onwards, and football opportunities begin in Primary 1.
Sport is an equally important part of this wider education. The Junior School fields 46 teams, with more than 350 pupils representing ESM in competitive fixtures. Alongside established sports including hockey, rugby, cricket, swimming, netball, football and athletics, children can try tennis, badminton, cross-country, golf, skiing, fencing, cheerleading and a wide range of dance styles. Skills clubs for older Junior pupils provide further time to practise, while the emphasis remains firmly on enjoyment, participation and developing a positive, lifelong relationship with physical activity.
Music and drama offer another route to confidence and self-expression. More than 300 specialist instrumental lessons take place each week across 23 instruments, and 312 Junior School pupils play an instrument. Choirs, ensembles and four large scale productions each year allow children to experience the excitement and discipline of preparing for an audience. A first solo, a speaking part or simply contributing reliably to a group can be a significant milestone.
The value of these experiences reaches well beyond the activity itself. Trying something unfamiliar develops curiosity and resilience. Working towards a shared goal builds teamwork, kindness and responsibility. Clubs also create friendships across classes and year groups, helping children find people who share their interests and strengthening their sense of belonging.
Just as importantly, the breadth of choice removes the pressure to fit a single mould. One child may thrive in a team sport, another in a rehearsal room, and another while designing, building or debating. Some will pursue an activity to a high level; others will take part simply because it is fun. Both matter. Children are encouraged to have a go, to learn from mistakes and to celebrate one another’s progress.
That spirit of exploration is central to the ESM Junior School experience. With specialist staff, extensive facilities and a programme designed around children’s different interests, extra-curricular life helps each pupil discover not only what they enjoy, but what they are capable of. Whether their week includes a choir rehearsal, a robotics challenge, a Saturday fixture or a new club tried for the first time, every experience adds another layer to their education—and another opportunity to find their thing.
