Preparing for School

From the start, our approach is rooted in building strong relationships between children, families, and staff, ensuring a seamless transition from Nursery to Primary 1.

As the children run up the path in the morning, hints of life beyond Nursery are everywhere: Senior students enjoying team sports on the nearby pitches, Primary children enjoying breaktimes in the playground , and our specialist teachers greeting everyone as they move across the site to work with different year groups.

Our son’s move from Nursery to Primary 1 was seamless. He was so excited to start, and was already familiar with the classroom, confidently telling us where to go on the first day, and really excited to see his new teacher again.

Our Campus

Even our buildings are designed to facilitate a seamless transition to Primary 1, with our youngest children all starting their morning walking up the path together. Their classrooms lead off from the same entranceway, so when the time comes to take the next step in their school journey, the children feel confident in their surroundings.

Getting Ready for Primary 1

Our pre-school transition programme is thorough and involves parents and children from the beginning of the year. Information events start in October to encourage social connections between parents. Our teachers ensure that children, while having fun and making friends, also develop essential physical, academic, and social skills to help them thrive as an Erskine Stewart Melville Primary 1.

Ready for the Next Adventure

In the term before Primary 1, children experience a more formal transition. Primary 1 teachers engage with Nursery children through storytelling and personal interactions. Our nursery rooms carry school uniforms and bags for role play, and staff nurture wellbeing and emerging literacy and numeracy, in preparation for more formal learning.

By the time the children are ready to take their next steps ‘into the big school’, they do so with confidence and excitement, ready for all the magic that Primary 1 has to offer.
