Understanding S1 Entry in Scotland – and the Private School Route

Moving to Senior School is an exciting milestone, for students and parents alike. If your child is approaching S1 entry, it’s helpful to understand how the process works in both the state and private school systems in Edinburgh, and across Scotland.

Here’s a clear guide to what to expect at Erskine Stewart Melville, and at your local school, and how to prepare.

When Do Children Move from P7 into S1?

In Scotland, children usually move from Primary 7 (P7) into Secondary 1 (S1) in August, around the time they turn 12 years old. In the state sector, most families transition from their local feeder primary school into the associated secondary school, though they can also submit a placing request if they prefer a different school. In Edinburgh, not all families are guaranteed a place at their local catchment school, especially if they have relocated to a school area which is in high demand.

The State School S1 Application Process

For Edinburgh state schools, the process is managed by the City of Edinburgh Council. Families are typically notified of their child’s catchment secondary school in December or January. If you want to apply elsewhere, you must submit a placing request, often due by mid-March.

Most students will start S1 the following August. The process is automatic for children attending a feeder primary, but parents can still discuss support needs or transitions directly with the school.

How S1 Entry Works in Private Schools

Private schools in Scotland operate their own S1 admissions and offer a more personalised approach. Instead of automatic transition, families apply for a place directly to their chosen school, and most schools invite children to an Assessment Day.

At Erskine Stewart Melville, our S1 Assessment Day is designed to help us understand each child’s academic strengths and potential, while giving them a feel for the atmosphere and opportunities in our Senior School. Children complete short papers in Mathematics, English, and Verbal Reasoning, meet some of our teachers, and enjoy a tour of the school.

When to Apply for an S1 Place in the Private School Sector

Most private schools begin their S1 admissions process around autumn of the year before entry. For August 2026 entry, applications should be submitted by December 2025, with assessments held in January. If you have missed this deadline, please do not worry. Get in touch and we can advise whether or not we still have any places yet.

In Edinburgh, we encourage families to apply early to secure a place and ensure plenty of time to visit the school before making their final decision.
