What are your standout memories from your time at ESMS? Were there any teachers, subjects, or extracurricular activities that had a lasting impact?
I have so many fond memories from my time at ESMS, having attended from nursery right through to S6 in 2006. My first teacher, Miss McVeigh in P1 and P2, and Miss Drummond in P6 stand out in my early years. Later on, the PE staff made a lasting impression, particularly Mr. MacKenzie, Mr. Allan, Mr. Burgess, Mr. Spence, and Mr. Lockie, who were coaches of the First XV. The sense of camaraderie and the encouragement I received from my teachers shaped many of the values I carry today.
When did you first become interested in property? Was it always your plan to study it at university?
My interest in property started at a young age. My father worked in property, and my mother was involved in a forestry and estates business with a property aspect, so it was always part of my world. I often accompanied my dad on surveys, which sparked my fascination. From early on, I knew I wanted to become a surveyor. University was always the plan, and I followed a clear path to get my degree.
How did your time at Aberdeen University shape your understanding of the industry?
While I’ll admit my university years weren’t entirely model student material, I gained invaluable lessons from my experiences. Completing the course provided a solid foundation of knowledge that I still draw on today. Many of the concepts I learned remain relevant, even though I didn’t ultimately become a surveyor.
What was your first role at DJ Alexander like, and how did it prepare you for the next steps in your career?
My first role in the lettings team was a true baptism of fire. I quickly transitioned to property management, where I faced complaints, coordinated with maintenance and finance teams, and solved problems daily. It was overwhelming at times, but I learned how to lean on colleagues for support. That environment taught me resilience and problem-solving. Skills I carry with me to this day.
What inspired you to take your career overseas to Hong Kong?
I had the opportunity to play rugby for Kowloon RFC in Hong Kong, and while it was a leap into the unknown career-wise, I saw it as an adventure. Initially, finding work was challenging, but I wanted a role that would help me grow professionally. The hardest part was leaving family and friends, but I was excited to explore a new culture and environment. The experience was transformative, both personally and professionally.
How did working in Hong Kong differ from working in the UK?
The pace was significantly faster in Hong Kong. The competitive nature of the property market required adaptability and quick decision-making. Cultural differences were also evident, from the etiquette of exchanging business cards to demonstrating respect in professional settings. One of the biggest rewards was the relationships I built—many of which remain invaluable to me today.
What brought you back to the UK, and how did that decision influence your career?
My wife and I both loved our time in Hong Kong, but we wanted to settle closer to family. After nearly six years, it felt like the right time to return. Moving to London provided a fresh challenge and allowed me to continue growing my career in a dynamic market.
Can you tell us about your role at Making Moves Residential?
I work primarily with high- and ultra-high-net-worth clients to source residential properties. A typical day involves conducting due diligence on properties, arranging viewings, liaising with agents, and reporting to clients. I also focus on business development, building networks with private client advisors. Looking ahead, I’m excited about growing our team and making Making Moves Residential a leading name in the sector.
How has the London property market evolved in recent years?
The market has faced various challenges, from economic shifts to political uncertainty. The non-dom status changes are currently a major factor influencing the movement of high-net-worth individuals. We’re also seeing younger buyers entering the market, many from tech, crypto, or with family wealth. The demand for high-end properties remains strong, particularly from US buyers taking advantage of the currency exchange rate.
What skills do you think are essential for success in the real estate industry?
A deep knowledge of the market is essential, but it’s equally important to build strong relationships. Clients expect a high level of service and expertise, so being proactive and reliable is key. Networking within the industry, whether with agents, financial advisors, or legal experts, is also invaluable.
Have mentors played a role in your career development?
While I haven’t had formal mentors, I’ve certainly learned a lot from past managers and colleagues. I’ve picked up lessons from both good and challenging experiences, which have shaped my leadership style. Now, as I build a new service line, I’m applying those insights to create a strong, supportive team.
What advice would you give to young people considering a career in property?
Be honest about the industry. It takes time to build relationships, knowledge, and credibility. While the allure of high-value deals may be tempting, success requires patience and resilience. The hard work pays off, but you need to be prepared for setbacks along the way.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Family time is a big priority, especially with a young son. I’m also a passionate rugby fan, and I enjoy skiing, golf, and cooking. Earlier this year I trained and completed the London marathon which was fantastic but a real challenge.
Looking back, is there anything you wish you had known when starting your career?
It would have been helpful to understand more about the different career pathways in property. Knowing the earning potential and challenges of commission-based roles earlier on would have given me greater perspective. A mentor during those tough periods would have been invaluable.
Finally, what’s next for you?
I’m focused on building the Making Moves Residential service line and establishing it as a key player in London’s high-end property market. The opportunity to grow a team, develop our niche, and make a lasting impact is something I’m incredibly excited about.
