Hockey
It’s midway through the season and our hockey teams are reporting strong results. On the MES side our S3A team was runner-up in the East District Tournament, and our 1st XI team is through to the Scottish Cup semi-finals. We also had one of our students, Jen (S6), selected to represent Scotland at the Junior World Cup in Chile along with recent former pupils Connie Roxburgh and Emily Morris.
On the SMC side, both our U15s and U18s won the East District Tournament for the fourth consecutive year. The two teams have since advanced to the Scottish Cup semi-finals. We’ve also had several students selected to national teams, including Greg (S6) and James (S5) to the Scotland U18 (Aspiring) squad, and Struan (S4), Alex (S4), Jamie (S5) and William (S4) to the Scotland U16 (Emerging) squad.
Rugby
The rugby season is in full swing with coaches reporting teams to be in healthy positions. Despite our 1st XV team suffering a difficult loss to a strong Strathallan School in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup, our U16A side has stormed their way to the Cup finals for the fourth consecutive year. The team will play Merchiston Castle School at Murrayfield in the new year.
We also have four current students who’ve been selected for Scottish Rugby’s National Talent Pathway, Archie (S5), Matthew (S5), Duncan (S5) and James (S6), as well as two recent former pupils, Calum Jessop and Ollie Anderson.
Cricket
Despite the cricket season not kicking off until the spring, we’ve had several students selected by Cricket Scotland for its regional and national pathway programmes. Regional cricket club the Eastern Knights has selected Euan (S5) and Ismaeel (S5) for its U17 team, and Ary (S4), Alastair (S3), Adam (S3), Callum (S3) and Jack (S3) for its U15 team. These athletes will train through the winter in preparation for a series of games across 50-over and T20 formats in the summer.
Netball
All MES Scottish Cup teams are through to the competition’s knock-out stages. And, in an MES first, our student Freya (S4) has been named to the Scotland U17 squad, which will compete at the 2026 Europe Netball Under 17 Championships in Aberdeen in March.
Basketball
Our MES 1st V team won a close fought game against Broughton High School, progressing to the regional finals of the Scottish Cup. Meanwhile, our MES S1 team will face off against Queensferry High School in the Scottish Cup’s regional semi-finals.
Swimming
After stellar performances last term, Lili (S3) has been selected to represent Scotland at the 59th Geneva International Challenge Swim Meet for the second year in a row. The annual competition is used by Scottish Swimming to give younger athletes a taste of international competition. Lili also competed at the European Youth Olympic Festival in North Macedonia in July.
Skiing
On the slopes, our skiers have had an impressive season racing at two national competitions. On November 20th at the Hillend Ski Centre, students Rory (S1), Anna (S1), Owen (S2), Harris (S1) and Lucas (S1) finished second as a team in the S1-3 age group at the Scottish Dual Slalom finals.
Thanks to their stellar performances, Anna was selected to represent Scotland A team and Lucy (S5) Scotland B team in a Nations Dual slalom competition at the British Schools’ Dryslopes Championships in Swadlincote. S4 Students Rory, Owen, Harris and Tommy also competed at the championships, racing as a team to finish just shy of a medal position in fourth.
Well done to all our athletes and coaches for a fantastic term of sport. We’re excited to see what 2026 brings!
