Here’s everything you need to know.
When Do Children Start Primary 1 in Scotland?Â
In Scotland, children usually start Primary 1 (P1) in August, if they turn five between 1 March of that year and the end of February the following year.
For example, a child who turns five in October 2025 would start school in August 2025, while a child who turns five in March 2025 would start school in August 2026.
What about Deferring Primary School Entry?
Parents of children born between late August and February can defer their child’s Primary 1 start date by one year, if they feel they’re not ready. Deciding to start primary school a year later is becoming more common among families.
How Does P1 Entry Work in Scottish State Schools?Â
For local authority schools, applications typically open in November for entry the following August. Parents apply to their catchment school through their council’s online system, providing proof of address and their child’s birth certificate. Many families also submit a placing request if they wish to attend a different school outside their catchment area. Councils aim to confirm P1 places by spring.
How is P1 Entry Different in Private Schools?Â
Private schools in Scotland manage their own admissions, and the process is more flexible. Instead of applying through their local council, families apply directly to their chosen school.
At Erskine Stewart’s Melville, our Junior School assessments are informal and designed to help us get to know your child as an individual. Children take part in fun, play-based activities with our teachers, helping us understand how they learn and how we can support them best from the start.
Families are also invited to meet members of our Leadership Team and tour our welcoming Junior School campus at Ravelston during their visit.
When Should I Apply for a P1 Place at an Independent School?Â
Most independent schools in Edinburgh accept applications well in advance, often up to 18 months before the school start date. For August 2026 entry, we are running regular assessments for children throughout the school term.
