What It Means to Belong at School

This year’s ESMS Wellbeing Conference welcomed over 100 educators from across Scotland who gathered to share best practice about supporting young people’s wellbeing in schools.

In a special live episode of the ESMS Principal Catch-Ups podcast, Dr Susan Woodshore shared her latest research on belonging in schools, co-authored with Mrs Jo McLaren.

Their findings offered data and reflection on how young people experience community during their school years, and what schools can do to strengthen that connection.

The topic is timely as we prepare for the merger of our Senior Schools. But this isn’t just about one school or one transition – helping students feel like they belong is an essential building block of their learning experience.

Why Belonging Matters

“The extent to which pupils feel personally accepted, respected, included, and supported by others in the school social environment.”
‘School Belonging: The Importance of Pupil and Teacher Relationships’ (Allen et al 2021)

A sense of belonging – feeling accepted, valued and supported – has been strongly linked with both academic achievement and positive mental health. When students feel that they are part of something bigger than themselves, they are more likely to engage, to take risks in their learning, and to support others.

The Five Pillars of Belonging

Based on their research, Dr Woodshore and Mrs McLaren see belonging as comprising of five core elements:

• Having purpose
• A sense of identity
• Feeling valued
• Having meaningful agency
• Maintaining close relationships

Relationships were by far the most significant pillar for our students. In a survey of S1-S6 students, 90% named friendships and peer connections as the biggest contributors to their sense of belonging – alongside shared experiences such as house events and sport. These social connections, the research found, help students feel seen and empowered in their learning setting, and underpinned all other pillars of their sense of belonging.

Building a Sense of Belonging in Schools

As Dr Woodshore explained, belonging doesn’t just happen – it needs to be built. Schools need to provide spaces and organised time for connection, in order to create a culture where every student feels recognised and valued. Schools and teachers play a vital role in shaping how young people relate to themselves, and each other.
