Stewart currently serves as Head of European Investment Banking at William Blair, having previously held roles at Lloyds, 3i and LDC. He studied Marketing and Economics, spent time on a graduate scheme, and even played squash professionally in the Netherlands along the way.

As our Class of 2025 prepares to take their own next steps, Stewart generously shared a few reflections and pieces of advice for the journey ahead.

Be open to opportunity
“People often ask me what my plan was, but I never had a fixed plan. It’s more about being ‘Never Unprepared’ for an opportunity when it comes along.
I knew what I was interested in – it was just a matter of figuring out how to align those interests with something I could do as a career.”

Focus on the mindset, not just outcomes
“When we approach a deal, we don’t start the process thinking about getting paid. We focus on making sure the right people are in place and that they are enabled and empowered to perform at a high level. That leads to the highest chance of success (and getting paid)!
In my mind, that’s what drives sustainable success.”

Build habits that last
“In banking, for example, that could mean learning financial modelling or researching deals that different firms have worked on.
It’s like an expedition – you don’t just look at your compass once at the start and then never again.
You check in regularly and course-correct as needed.
Set achievable goals and keep moving forward.”

Take advice, and listen well
“A piece of advice that has stuck with me was from Miss Milligan, a teacher who sadly passed away young. I’ve always been outgoing, sometimes a bit too much so, and she once told me: ‘People will like you, but you have to listen to them. It can’t always be about you.’”

Let yourself be inspired
“I get my inspiration from all over the place. I see people doing brave or selfless things every day, often just ordinary people trying to get through life, which isn’t always easy.
It’s not about one person or one big moment for me.
I think it’s important to look around, stay curious, and allow yourself to be inspired by a wide range of things.”

And, finally…
“Integrity is everything. If you’re honest and act with integrity, it’ll take you far.”

A huge thank you to Stewart for sharing his thoughtful words with us. To the Class of 2025: we hope this leaves you feeling inspired to carve your own path, with curiosity, kindness and integrity leading the way!
