In Memoriam: Sir Fraser Stoddart (1942–2024)

The Erskine Stewart’s Melville Schools community joins together in celebrating the life and extraordinary achievements of Sir Fraser Stoddart, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist and one of our most distinguished Melville College former pupils, who passed away peacefully on 30 December 2024 at the age of 82.

Sir Fraser Stoddart’s journey from the classrooms of Melville College to the global stage of scientific discovery is an inspiration to all who follow in his footsteps. Born in Edinburgh in 1942, Sir Fraser attended Melville College, where his early passion for science and innovation was ignited. Teachers and peers alike recall his curiosity, intellect, and determination, qualities that laid the foundation for a career that would leave an indelible mark on the scientific world.

After leaving Melville College, Sir Fraser pursued his studies at the University of Edinburgh, earning a BSc and PhD in Chemistry. Over the decades, his pioneering research in molecular nanotechnology revolutionized our understanding of molecular machines. His development of mechanically interlocked molecules such as catenanes and rotaxanes earned him the highest scientific accolade, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, in 2016. The Nobel Committee lauded his work for “taking molecular systems to a new dimension,” a testament to his visionary contributions.

Despite his global acclaim, Sir Fraser’s heart remained firmly rooted in Edinburgh and at Melville College. He frequently credited his school for instilling in him the values of discipline, resilience, and intellectual curiosity. In his own words, “Melville College taught me not just to seek answers but to question the world around me.” Sir Fraser visited the School on numerous occasions, inspiring generations of pupils with his wisdom, humility, and passion for discovery.

Beyond his scientific achievements, Sir Fraser was a tireless advocate for education, diversity, and collaboration. He established mentorship programs for young scientists, championed the role of women in STEM, and worked to ensure that the benefits of scientific progress were shared widely. His commitment to the betterment of humanity extended far beyond the laboratory, embodying the highest ideals of the Melville College spirit.

The school’s alumni community has benefitted immensely from Sir Fraser’s involvement over the years. His speeches at reunions and careers events left a lasting impression, as he encouraged fellow alumni to give back and support the next generation.

Sir Fraser’s passing is a profound loss to the world of science and to all who knew him. Yet, his life’s work and the values he embodied will continue to resonate. He leaves behind a legacy of brilliance, humility, and an unwavering belief in the power of education to change lives.

We extend our deepest condolences to Sir Fraser’s family, friends, and colleagues during this time of mourning. As we celebrate his remarkable life, we invite the wider School community to join us in honouring his memory.

In celebrating Sir Fraser Stoddart, we celebrate the profound impact that one individual, driven by curiosity and determination, can have on the world. His story reminds us all to dream big, work hard, and give back.

Rest in peace, Sir Fraser. You will be dearly missed, but your legacy will endure forever.
